APPLICATION

Cr12 steel is a high carbon and high chromium martensitic cold work die steel. With its advantages of high hardenability, high hardness and wear resistance, and small quenching deformation, it is mainly used for cold stamping dies, silicon steel sheet punching dies, thread rolling dies, wire drawing dies, drawing dies, cold extrusion dies, gauges, cold cutting scissors, and woodworking blades that require low impact loads and high wear resistance.


CR12 STEEL CHARACTERISTICS


Cr12 steel is a general-purpose high-carbon high-chromium cold work die steel with the widest application in China. It complies with the national standard GB/T 1299-2014, belongs to high-carbon high-chromium ledeburite steel, is the most representative classic steel among cold work die steels, and has corresponding alternative grades of the same standard in global industrial fields with extremely strong versatility.


The core advantage of Cr12 steel lies in its excellent hardenability. Even for workpieces with large cross-sections, it can achieve uniform hardness throughout, and the deformation after quenching is extremely small, which is very suitable for manufacturing die parts with complex shapes and high requirements for dimensional accuracy.


Cr12 steel treated by vacuum degassing refining has better steel purity than ordinary cold work die steel. Most Cr12 steel adopts spheroidizing annealing softening treatment before leaving the factory. Therefore, Cr12 steel has good cutting performance and lower subsequent processing cost. Some Cr12 steel after process improvement will be specially added with vanadium and molybdenum elements to further strengthen the steel performance, and the wear resistance is improved more significantly.


In terms of composition characteristics, the carbon content of Cr12 steel is controlled between 2.00% and 2.30%, and the chromium content reaches 11.50% to 13.00%. A large amount of undissolved carbides are uniformly distributed in the matrix, which endows Cr12 steel with far superior wear resistance than ordinary tool steels. After conventional quenching and tempering, the hardness can reach 58-64HRC, which fully meets the requirements of high-wear-resistant processing scenarios.


The heat treatment process of Cr12 steel is mature and flexible, and corresponding treatment schemes can be selected according to different application requirements. At present, medium-temperature quenching at about 1050℃ combined with high-temperature tempering at 500-520℃ is recommended in industrial production. This treatment can not only retain the high hardness above 60HRC, but also fully eliminate quenching stress, so that Cr12 steel has sufficient toughness, and it is not easy to crack or anneal in subsequent wire cutting and grinding.


Limited by its composition characteristics, Cr12 steel also has certain limitations. Carbide segregation is easy to occur in the steel, and the overall impact toughness is relatively low. Therefore, it is more suitable for processing scenarios with low impact load and high requirements for wear resistance. As long as the model selection is matched, the stable and excellent performance of Cr12 steel can be fully exerted to meet the needs of mass industrial production.
